21 Things I Learned Before Turning 22

I turned 22 last week…and I’m so grateful!

There have been so many things that have happened that helped shape me into the young woman that I am today. Here is a list of 21 things that I learned before turning 22. Some funny, some not so funny. ENJOY. And maybe you have a couple of things to add to the list? Drop them in the comment section!

  1. Always seek advice from God before anyone else… aka PRAY
  2. Although you may not always see eye to eye, your parents are some of your greatest allies, and biggest fans. Treat them as such.
  3. 9/10, your little brother will grow up to be your big little brother, and repay you for all of those times that you punked him. Tread lightly.
  4. Sometimes things just don’t work out and it’s no one’s fault.
  5. …and just because it doesn’t happen when you want it to, doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen.
  6. Learn to compromise, but don’t compromise yourself
  7. Friends last longer than boyfriends, and family is forever.
  8. You can NOT use something PHYSICAL to fill a void in your SPIRIT.
  9. You are a whole person, not a half, so no other person can “complete” you.
  10. Most of the time, the things that you think are blocking your success are self-imposed. Don’t stand in the way of your own success because you’re scared.
  11. If you know that God’s promised you something, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t have it.
  12. On the same token, don’t tell everyone your vision. Everyone won’t get it…because it’s not theirs. And you know what happens when people don’t understand things, right? Hate.
  13. Kings and Queens aren’t always adorned with crowns. Greatness is defined by character, not by material possession.
  14. College is a time to learn about you. Have fun, and experience everything you can, because you’ll never get that time back.
  15. You can grow without changing. Yes. Think about it.
  16. Angry does NOT equal Strong. There is a stark difference between being a strong, pretty brown girl and an angry, pretty brown girl.
  17. Take pride in your appearance. You don’t have to be dressed up everyday, but elements of your style should progress as you get older…lose the Tinkerbell tee.
  18. Use your resources. Most successful people have what they have because they weren’t afraid to ask for help.
  19. Be faithful to your internships, whether they’re paid or unpaid. You never want to burn a bridge, because most industries are small. You never want to be the person who flaked.
  20. Learn something new when you’re not in school. Maybe that means picking up a book, or watching a tutorial on Youtube…whatever it may be. Self-enrichment is self-fulfilling.
  21. Let your light SHINE…but realize people will try to throw shade to block it. Not everyone is going to like you, or how God blesses you, but that doesn’t mean that you should stop being the best you that YOU can be.
