The Benefits of Silence

Confession: I have been struggling. The struggle is real in my life, and I can say that now. At one point in time, I probably wouldn’t have been able to admit that, but with experience comes growth.

If we’re all honest, none of us are perfect. There are things that each of us know that we can improve on, but for whatever reason… the change is hard to bring to fruition. We work around change. We try to find quick fixes and easy routes to avoid taking a hard look at ourselves and putting our best foot forward to make them happen. No one really wants to work hard at something if there’s an easier way, and if you say you do… congrats on being superhuman.

I could tell that my avoidance was taking a toll, so a recent decision with my friends to fast from media for seven days was just what I needed. Of course, my initial reaction to the idea of the fast was this:

Straight. Rebellion. Of course I don’t want to break away from everything that’s distracting me from handling everything I’ve been procrastinating on for months. I knew, however, that I needed to be obedient, and that there was some reason that we agreed to do it. No TV, no social media, no secular music…. for 7 days.

I always find that I get the best ideas in the middle of the night. It’s the quiet stillness that allows you to be alone with your thoughts, or to hear from God. A week of that though, was a challenge that I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to.

If you know me, you know that I am the go-to-girl for information. News, politics, entertainment… I make it a practice to be in the know. A lot of my knowledge, and sharing of information, comes from social media.

It’s a little sick, you know. Our generation has an incessant desire for inclusion. When I was disconnected, I found myself most frustrated with the fact that I felt that I was missing out on something. As it turns out, I didn’t really miss much. At least nothing more important than what I gained.

It wasn’t until I decided to start looking at the silence as an opportunity to get back to myself, that I truly started seeing the benefit. I gained insight. I got work done, and I heard what I needed to hear from God to make the move toward the next phase in my life and my career.

My friends and I have decided that this will be a once a month adventure… just to get us prepared for what’s about to happen in our lives. We’re expecting greatness.

How about you? Do you think that there’s anything that’s keeping you from hearing what you need to hear… or a distraction that’s keeping you from handling your business? Let’s chat.

  1. Great message….much of our lives are consumed with “stuff” that we miss out on the what’s most important..reconnecting with ourselves…Our goal…and GOD…Now..let’s see if I can do this….;)

  2. This makes two of us … and as much as it may drive me crazy to WANT to know everything going on, shutting off for a while doesn’t seem so bad.

    1. Well there were caveats to that because I also have a professional responsibility to social media. I only got on when I needed to do something for work purposes. It was EXTREMELY difficult!

What Do You Think...?
